Prologue

They had almost sent her son to the mines when she discovered there were others like her.

Families coerced into giving up their children for minor grievances over unjust laws.

To add insult to injury, one of the enforcers came by her work and made it clear they had no consideration for people like her as actual people -- rather, they saw her as something to toy with, a distraction, entertainment.

Regardless of the cost to their lives. Their whole lives. The lives of her children.

She had always known this was a caste system. Although those in power would always deny any such thing. But now she realized it was way worse than she thought.

The reality is that there were many who knew, folks on the edges of the city who experienced it firsthand. Sometimes you could see them protesting, signs held high that showed messages of how unjust everything was, how many lives wasted.

Underground, there was a revolution building. Soon she would learn so much more than she ever thought possible for one life. Critical knowledge that would matter for so many others that would come after.

Because this was only the beginning.

And they were legion.

One More Train

It was late.

She knew it would have been better to take the earlier train, but now it no longer mattered.

Sighing, she gazed down the corridor, hoping there would be at least one more train home.

Finally the lights lit up the side of the tunnel and she felt instantly relieved. Moments later she stepped onto the platform and practically collapsed into a seat, as there were still a hundred blocks to go.

She wondered what the point of all this was, really.

A lot of effort and for what? To gain some tiny foothold in this giant city, to what end?

The answer to this would take years to unfold...
